Industrial
gas users can be supplied from a high
pressure pipeline or from an intermediate,
medium or low pressure gas main. Many industrial gas users manage their
own private gas distribution networks which supply gas from a gas meter/regulator
installation operated by a Gas
Transporter to gas combustion equipment
installed on the site. Industrial gas users who manage and operate private
gas distribution
networks must ensure that they meet the requirements of The
Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, where appropriate.
When gas is distributed at higher pressures operators of private networks
must meet the requirements of the Pressure
Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR)
Persons who undertake work on gas appliances and their supply pipe work
should be registered
with CORGI
for the appropriate modules covering
the type of work they are undertaking.
Persons undertaking work on below ground private gas distribution networks
should be registered
with Gas and Water
industry national training board GWINTO and be be in possession of
the appropriate Gas Network Operations qualification Reference can be
made to
Lloyds Register for a list of qualified contractors registered to
undertake work on gas infrastructure pipe work.
Industrial gas users must ensure that their gas systems and equipment
are designed, constructed, operated
and maintained to relevant standards.
Electrical equipment installed in a location where there is a potential
for there to be an explosive atmosphere, such as on or near to gas regulators
and meters, must be designed to prevent
ignition of an explosive atmosphere should it occur. Such equipment must
comply with the Equipment & Protective
Systems Regulations (EPS) and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere
Regulations(DSEAR). Industrial gas users can purchase their gas from
a number of gas suppliers. For information on gas suppliers contact
Energywatch.
